Springfield, Mo.-Sophomore Cassandra Leuthold captured her second individual title of the season as No. 1 Nebraska rolled to a first-place finish at the Ozark Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskers fought hard in round one on Saturday to be seeded in Sunday's tournament. NU trudged through the brackets and faced Arkansas State for the Ozark Invitational Title, where Nebraska prevailed, 4-2.
"This really wasn't our best performance because of the winter break layoff," Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said. "Things were rusty the first day, but by the second day we got rid of the rust. I'm really happy with the results and look forward to what our next tournament will bring."
Leuthold's first-place finished earned her a spot on the Ozark Invite all-tournament team. Freshman Katie Ann Sopp joined Leuthold on the all-tournament team, capturing her fourth top-10 finish on the year.
Nebraska will have a two-week break before returning to action on Feb. 1-3 in Jonesboro, Ark., for the Mid-Winter Classic. The Huskers have five regular-season tournaments left in the spring season before the NCAA Championship in Omaha, Neb., on April 10-12.
Three Former Huskers on Team USA
Nebraska will continue to dominate the national bowling scene in 2008, as three former Husker bowlers earned spots on Team USA this year. Brenda (Edwards) Viator, a competitor for NU during the 1999s, joined Shannon Pluhowsky and Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty on the team in 2008. Viator placed fifth in the trials with an average of 206.53 to earn a spot on the team.
Former Huskers Amanda Burgoyne and Adrienne Miller and current NU bowler Lindsay Baker all placed in the top-20 of the Team USA trials, but were unable to make the 2008 Team USA.
