NU wrestler Vince Jones overcame a first-round loss to advance to the final day of the Midlands Championships by winning three consolation matches Saturday in Evanston, Ill.
Jones clinched his bid in the final day with a 14-5 major-decision win over Vinnie Wagner of Iowa. With the win, Jones moves into a consolation match against Louis Caputo of Harvard, the No. 4 seed, who was also upset early in Saturday’s action. Jones is two wins away from clinching a top-eight finish at 184 pounds.
The No. 5 seed in his weight class, Jones was upset in his first match of the day by Jared Deaguero of Adams State, 9-8. Jones rebounded with an impressive 14-3 major decision win over Michael Burke of Wabash in his first consolation match. After that, Jones defeated Jim Ciccone of Air Force, 9-5.
Jones will resume competition at the Midlands Championships tomorrow, with the first consolation matches slated to begin at noon.
