Huskers Sit in Sixth After Day One

Austin ? The Husker swimming and diving team set a pair of relay season-best times and used several solid performances to score 69 points and sit in sixth place out of 14 teams following Thursday’s first day of competition at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.

 

Sophomore Mariah Hutchinson had Nebraska’s highest individual placing in the pool, as she finished 19th overall and third in the C Final in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.16). Freshman Brandie Kavalec qualified for the C Final as well, placing 22nd overall in 5:03.11. Both were season-best times for Hutchinson and Kavalec.

 

Each of Nebraska’s relays set season-best times also, as the 200 freestyle team of freshman Jess Andrews, junior Jenna Stroud, junior Jenny Toler and senior Lynn Siemert swam a time of 1:35.53 to finish eighth to open the finals session. In the last event of the night, the Huskers’ 10th-place 400 medley relay team of sophomore Kelsey Ida, sophomore Kaitlin Arntz, freshman Kelsey Grushecky and junior Jenny Toler broke NU’s season-best time with a clocking of 3:52.26, over a second and half faster than its previous best of 3:53.96 from the Nevada/Nebraska-Omaha double dual on Nov. 2.

 

Junior Courtney Jolly finished 12th in the preliminary round of the three-meter dive with a score of 253.25, but did not qualify for the finals.
