Lincoln ? Fans who have purchased tickets to Nebraska’s volleyball match on Oct. 21, will be a part of NCAA history, as NU Athletic Department officials announced Wednesday that more than 13,000 tickets have been sold for the highly anticipated matchup at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
A total of 13,136 tickets have been sold in advance for the contest between the No. 1 Huskers and No. 12 Rainbow Wahine, a total that will surpass the record of 13,081 set by Nebraska against Penn State at the Qwest Center in Omaha on Sept. 2. It will be the first time a volleyball match has sold out at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson said that the record crowd is attributed to the work that Head Coach John Cook and his players do to promote volleyball across the state.
“Today’s announcement is just another example of the bond that Coach Cook and his team have created across the state,” Pederson said. “By playing this match at the Devaney Center, we wanted to give more of our fans an opportunity to see in person what a truly special group of women we have, and the response in tickets sales is truly overwhelming.”
Fans across Nebraska who are unable to witness the record crowd in person will also be able to watch the match live as Nebraska Educational Television (NET) will carry the contest between the Huskers and Hawaii. Fans can also listen to the match live on the Husker Sports Network and on the Internet at Huskers.com.
Record-breaking crowds are nothing new to the Husker volleyball program. Of the seven largest regular-season crowds in NCAA history, all seven have involved the Huskers, including the previous NCAA single-match record of 12,504 set against Colorado at the Bob Devaney Sports Center during the 2000 season.
Next weekend will be a special one for the Husker volleyball program, as Nebraska’s match against Kansas on Saturday, Oct. 20, will be the 100th consecutive sellout at the NU Coliseum ? marking only the second time in NCAA history that a women’s sport will enjoy a streak of at least 100 consecutive sellouts.
