On Wake’s ground problems
“Just watching the film, it wasn’t necessarily a struggle. They just wanted to do some different things against BostonCollege. They tried to get the ball into the hands of their playmakers. Just looking at it we can kind of tell who they want to have the ball in their hands. I definitely think they’re disappointed losing that game, especially getting up 14-0 early. I definitely see it’s going to be a test for us as far as a defense going out there in that environment with an offense like theirs that has a lot of multiplicity and has some athletes out there. We feel like it will be a challenge. We’re just going to prepare the best we can before we get out there.”
On if he expects WakeForest to throw the ball often
“I can’t really tell until you get out there. We feel like we have good packages for whatever team we’re facing. I think they’re no different. I think we’re going to prepare for them. The coaches have a plan for that. We’re going to prepare for whatever they might have in store. Like I said, they have a lot different dimensions to their offense and they’ve got great coaches and hard-nosed kids that are going to play hard. We look forward to playing them.”
On WakeForest’s passing game
“It definitely means that you have to really focus on keys. You can’t let your eyes wander on whatever in the backfield because that will definitely get you out of place. You really have to have strong eyes and key reading really well, especially against a team like this that has a lot of things that they can do. Sometimes it can maybe be a trick ?em style of offense in a way, but when it comes down to it you have to line up and play just like anybody else and that’s what we plan on doing.”
On the change from WakeForest in 2005 to now
“I think they do a lot of things differently now than they did back then. I think they ran the ball a lot back then. They wanted to control the ball and didn’t want to make mistakes. They’re still in some ways that way, but I think they want to get the ball into their playmaker’s hands and that’s what we need to focus on; being in the area where they throw the ball. You’ve got to key read well and have strong eyes. They want to get the ball out quick and not get behind and that worked well last year and I’m sure it’s going to work well this year. Hopefully we can go out there and keep them from being effective in that way.”
On his expectations for the pace of the game
“I feel like going out there it’s definitely going to be a long game. Their style of offense tries to control the clock. Get it here, get it there and stay on schedule. Their style of offense is very quick-paced. It gets you tired quick if you don’t get guys on the ground and stop them from getting yards after the catch or after contact. Like I said, (you've) got to stay on the screws and play well when you go against a team like that.”
