Lincoln ? The Nebraska football team continued their third week of fall camp on Tuesday with a 2 hour and 45-minute practice in half pads inside Memorial Stadium. The Huskers welcomed an audience of more than 250 special guests to Tuesday’s practice, as Nebraska Air and Army National Guard members and their families enjoyed fall drills and a short scrimmage.
Nebraska also welcomed University of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman to the beginning of practice, when Perlman addressed the team, wishing them luck for this upcoming season.
Following practice, Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson addressed questions about Monday’s announcement of senior Sam Keller as the starting quarterback heading into the Huskers’ first game against Nevada in 11 days.
“We put a lot of time into (the decision),” Watson said. “It wasn’t just made in a day. It was made over the spring and the beginning of two-a-day camp. It got to a point where Sam was executing at a pretty high level, and we felt like it was the right decision to make at the time, so we went ahead and moved forward.”
Watson also emphasized the competitiveness of the quarterback race between Keller and junior Joe Ganz, and stressed Ganz’s importance to the team as a backup.
“We’re really proud of the work ethic both of them exhibited,” Watson said. “It was a really good competition and both of them did an excellent job.”
“Joe’s the most important guy on the team?the backup always is. I know that from my past experience handling the position. We don’t look at Joe necessarily as a backup. He’s proven that he’s capable of being a starter. He’s got to be ready to go in and win games, and more importantly, win championships.”
The Huskers continue their final week of fall camp on Wednesday, as they will again practice from 2-4:45 p.m.
