Over 500 Participate in Fourth Annual Callahan 5K Run/Walk

Lincoln? The fourth annual Coach Callahan Charities 5K/Fun Run took place Saturday morning as more than 500 runners took to the streets of Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. The event, sponsored by the Nebraska Heart Institute and Houchen Bindery, benefited the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) and the UNL Libraries Electronic Resources Fund.  Approximately $10,000 was raised for the two charities bringing the total amount donated from the Fun Run to $40,000.  <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Additional sponsors of the event included adidas, Ideal Images, Huskers Authentic, The Lincoln Track Club, The Lincoln Running Company, and Bagels & Joe.

The Nebraska men’s and women’s track and cross country teams volunteered their time on both courses for the fourth consecutive year as runners made the loop around Haymarket Park and back to Stadium Drive where the event began.

Numerous members of the Athletic Department and their families assisted in the preparation for the event, as well as participating in the 5K and 1 mile Run/Walk.

A pair of high school cross country coaches were the winners in the 5K as Bellevue East head coach Jason Shanahan of Waverly was the overall winner in 17:29, while Omaha Westside head coach Theresa Gosnell of <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Omaha was the women’s winner in 19:16.
