Lincoln - The Nebraska football team emphasized its running game during a 55-play scrimmage that highlighted a 2 1/2 hour full pads workout Friday morning at Memorial Stadium. It was the first of two practices for the Huskers on Friday, the second two-a-day format for Nebraska this fall.
“We just want to try to continue to see where we’re at as far as timing,” Coach Bill Callahan said. “We have a lot of different guys in there, so we wanted to make sure the execution was right. Of course, we also looked at those young backs.”
Sophomore Major Culbert, freshmen Quentin Castille, Marcus Mendoza and Roy Helu and junior Marlon Lucky all saw time in the backfield for Nebraska during the scrimmage.
“It was a good day to watch all of our I-backs,” Callahan said. “I really just wanted to watch them run and see all the physical elements. We’ll have a chance to look at the film this afternoon and evening and have a chance to build on those weaknesses and strengths as we continue to move on.”
With the Huskers’ I-backs drawing the bulk of the ball-carrying duties, Nebraska’s quarterbacks moved out of the spotlight for the workout.
“We really didn’t do much in our passing game that would lead to significant evaluation because we were really trying to look at our running game,” Callahan said.
Nebraska continues fall camp with an afternoon workout this afternoon at 3:30 p.m., before Saturday’s 2007 Football Fan Day, scheduled for 10 a.m. at Memorial Stadium. For more information on Fan Day and the host of additional events scheduled for Saturday, click here.
