Huskers Practice Twice under Summer Sun

Lincoln? The Husker football team went through their first two-a-day practice session of training camp on Saturday, battling through the stifling summer heat.

Both of Saturday’s practices were conducted inside Memorial Stadium. During the 2 ? hour morning workout in full pads, the Huskers went through went through scrimmage drills. Nebraska was back on the field for two hours in the afternoon in half-pads.

Among the Saturday morning drills was practice in red zone and third down situations, as well as a 20-play scrimmage at the end of practice.

“I thought the tempo was good,” Head Coach Bill Callahan said after the morning practice. “They competed hard for 20 plays. We’re just trying to get back into condition for scrimmage tempo and the execution was good for a normal-down situation scrimmage.”

No blitzes were allowed in the 20-play scrimmage, as the coaching staff was looking for the team to execute basic plays against standard defensive fronts as it nears the end of the first week of fall camp.

“It was a good opportunity to see some guys we hadn’t and put them into some pressure situations,” Callahan said. “Overall, there’s good progress to report. The players are working hard and I’m really excited about our first day with the scrimmage atmosphere. It was really productive.”

Nebraska welcomed wide receiver Todd Peterson and offensive guard Andy Christensen to the practice field on Saturday after recent minor injuries. I-back Marlon Lucky left the morning workout a few minutes early with a minor injury and sat out the afternoon drills, as did fellow I-back Cody Glenn.

Nebraska will complete its first full week of practice on Sunday afternoon with its eighth practice in the first seven days of fall camp. Nebraska will continue with single practices on Monday through Thursday, before going through another two-a-day session next Friday.
