Huskers Practice Inside Memorial Stadium

Lincoln? For the first time this fall the Nebraska football team practiced inside Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field for a 2 1/2 hour workout in helmets and shoulder pads Thursday afternoon.

The practice was the fourth of fall camp as the Huskers prepare to don full pads for Friday’s 3 p.m. workout.

“It was great weather today,” Head Coach Bill Callahan said. “It was absolutely great. It was good to get out in the heat and work a little bit. Our kids are acclimating to this type of weather and I think it’s good. We’ve been inside for the last two days so it was great to finally get outside.”

With the rising temperatures, Callahan addressed the precautionary measures of making sure all the players are fully hydrated by taking two breaks during Thursday’s workout.

“We’re always on alert,” Callahan said. “You can’t ever be too cautious when you get into these extremes, especially when you’re practicing on a FieldTurf where the heat bounces and radiates off the press box.”

Callahan felt Thursday’s workout inside Memorial Stadium was one of the Huskers’ sharpest this week, but the coaching staff is now looking for consistency from the 2007 squad as it approaches the end of the first week of fall camp.

“The biggest thing is that as a team we’re getting better,” Callahan said. “I saw a huge leap as a team today with the way they came out to start practice and how they worked and finished through the periods. I thought it was an excellent practice in that regard. The challenge now is to stack practices and see if we can do it again.”

After reevaluating the injury situations, the Huskers may go through full scrimmage drills as early as Friday afternoon in the 3 p.m. practice. Saturday will be the first two-a-day session of fall camp for Nebraska.
