Barry Turner Quotes

Nebraska Football

Preseason Press Conference
Monday, Aug. 6 - 11 a.m.

Memorial Stadium - Lincoln, Neb.

Barry Turner - Junior, Defensive End
On his added size

"I added 10 or 15 pounds, that’s what I’m going to say. I’m around about 270. I put on extra weight because I felt like I’m going to play a whole lot more than last year. I want to take on the run just as much."

On outsiders questioning his ability (Listen)

"I was criticized on not being able to play the run, but I played behind Jay Moore and Adam Carriker. I played limited just on my special ability, which was pass rush, so now I gained the extra weight so I can make sure I can take on the run."

On retaining his speed

"I wouldn’t gain the weight if I couldn’t still run."

On his increased size and how he gained weight

"In the weight room. It’s really good weight. It’s muscle."

On handling the spotlight on the defensive line (Listen)

"We lost the front four that was a great defensive line. Even losing that, we knew as a group, we have to work even harder. So we've been doing that all summer, the whole defense. We run together, we do everything together. It’s going to be a really great team that we have."

On "experts" preseason opinions of defense

"I don’t even read that garbage. I haven’t really paid attention to the preseason rankings. I don’t even know if they have preseason rankings. I just play football. I do what I do best."

On everybody being more vocal

"I've got an opinion where some guys need it, some guys don’t. Some guys take it in well, some guys take it out. It's all dependent on who the type of person is. You need to know what each player is by growing as a group and knowing who can take that in."

On his strength as a speed rusher or a run stopper

"For this year, I want to be known as both. I can pass rush and stop the run just as well."

On his ability to be a vocal leader

"I can be vocal. If you ever come out to practice, you’ll hear me."

On the strength of Nebraska's defensive front (Listen)

"(Ndamukong) Suh is probably one of the strongest men in the world. Suh has got unlimited potential. Keep him healthy and he’ll be in the league somewhere. (Ty) Steinkuhler just as well. He’s smart and hard working. There’s unlimited talent with what we got on the defensive line, but we are going to show it this year."

On what player or position improved the most during the offseason

"The D-line as a whole. We’ve worked extremely hard together. We work out together. We go out and eat together. A lot of things we do as a group to keep that closeness."

On importance of having a strong fourth player on the defensive line

"We are confident in whoever they put in that place. We feel everybody is going to work as hard as they can or give the best effort they can on the field."

On how being in the spotlight increases his drive

"It fuels us as far as we are going to work harder so we can help prove it’s wrong. Because we’ve lost some great players before."

On new defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt (Listen)

"He’s a technician as far as working on your hands. That’s what he really focuses on."
