Bratislava, Slovakia - Nebraska incoming freshman Kaitlyn Burke scored 11 points to help Canada to its first victory at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women with a 74-72 win over Japan.
Burke, who will be a freshman point guard for the Huskers during the 2007-08 campaign, added three rebounds, three assists and a steal in 20 minutes for Canada. She hit 2-of-3 shots from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line in the narrow victory over Japan.
Canada trailed 17-15 early in the game before a 13-point run helped them take a 37-24 halftime lead. Canada's lead grew to 15 points at 53-38, before the Japanese came back to make it close down the stretch.
Canada improved to 1-1 in Group C play at the tournament, after opening the World Championships with a 79-63 loss to Serbia. Burke scored six points and grabbed two rebounds in the opener for Canada.
Canada will face the Czech Republic next in Group C play. The Czechs opened the tournament with a 109-91 win over Japan. The World Championships are scheduled to continue through Aug. 5.
