Lincoln ? The University of Nebraska will play host to the 2009 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Head Coach Dan Kendig announced Thursday. The three-day competition is slated for April 16-19, 2009.
The 2009 Championships will mark the second time NU will house the event, as it also played host to the same championship in 2003 for the first time in school history. Nebraska has most recently seen such major meets as the 2006 Big 12 Championships and 2005 South Central Regional at the Devaney Center.
The University of Georgia is set to play host to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., in 2008, while the University of Florida was selected for the 2010 competition in Gainesville, Fla.
“Having just hosted the NCAA Championships in 2003 and getting opportunity to do it again this soon is a tremendous honor,” Kendig said. “It makes us feel like we put in a great effort in 2003.
"The most exciting part about that year was walking out in our home arena the night of the Super Six Finals, and the crowd was unbelievable. That’s the kind of energy and excitement we can expect from our fans in 2008 and 2009 to achieve our ultimate goals and build some excitement for some of the nation's best competitors coming to Lincoln. Our job is to get to work immediately to host a first-class event and make the 2009 Championships the best yet.”
