Lincoln ? Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson announced today that catcher Mitch Abeita will be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a broken right fibula during last week’s Big 12 Tournament.
“We X-rayed it and it looks like there is a fracture in the leg,” Anderson said. “It’s unfortunate he won’t be available this weekend and is probably done for the year.”
Abeita suffered the season-ending injury after he was upended by KansasState’s Jordan Cruz on a force place at the plate in Nebaska’s 5-1 loss to KansasState on May 24. X-rays taken Tuesday in Lincoln revealed the broken bone after the original X-rays last Friday came up negative.
“He just wasn’t to the point we wanted him to be, so we thought we needed another check on it. Our doctors up here took a look at it and saw the fracture.”
Abeita, who will accompany the team to this weekend’s regional in Tempe, appeared in 46 contests for the Huskers this season, hitting .286 with a homer and 20 RBIs in his first season at Nebraska. An honorable-mention All-Big 12 pick, Abeita was playing his best baseball during the final month of the season, hitting .357 over his final 14 contests.
