Athens, Ga. - Nebraska junior Imke Reimers was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Women's Singles Championships on Wednesday in Athens, Ga, by Miami's Audrey Banada, 7-5, 6-0. Reimers was just the third Husker to ever play in the NCAA Championships.
Reimers hung tough in the first set, which went back and forth the whole way, but Banada pulled away at the end for a 7-5 victory. Reimers wasn't able to get back on track after that, and lost the second set 6-0, ending her season.
Along with Sandra Noetzel (1999) and Gitte Ostermann (2005), Reimers lost in the first round of the NCAA Championships, and the Huskers have yet to have a player record a victory in the tournament in school history. Despite the loss, Reimers' junior season was still one of the greatest in school history. The Papenburg, Germany, native went 28-8, good for the second most singles victories in a single season in school history. Reimers also moved into first place this season on the Huskers all-time career singles winning percentage chart, with a 69-26 career record and a .726 winning percentage.
