Four Huskers Named Academic All-Big 12

Lincoln -- Four Husker baseball players earned accolades for their efforts in the classroom, as they were selected to the 2007 academic All-Big 12 team this week. The honorees included junior outfielder Bryce Nimmo, infielder Jake Mort and pitchers Matt Foust and Luke Wertz.

Nimmo is a two-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection, while the other three players were all second-team selections and were lauded for the first time in their career.

On the season, Nimmo has appeared in 39 games and is hitting .292 with a team-high 11 stolen bases. Mort is hitting .264 with five RBIs and has not committed an error in his last 34 games dating back to the 2006 season. Foust is 1-4 with a 3.60 ERA in a team-high 22 games, while his five saves rank among the Big 12 leaders. Wertz has moved into the weekend rotation and sports a 3-0 record with a 2.09 ERA over 43 innings of work.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. All players nominated must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests, while pitchers are required to have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 20 percent of their team’s total games.

The Huskers return to Big 12 action Friday night, as they begin a three-game series at Kansas. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried across the state on the Husker Sports Network.
