Husker Golfers Earn NCAA Regional Bid

The Nebraska men’s golf team is one of 27 schools who have been selected to participate in NCAA Central Regional Championship on May 17-19. The 54-hole championship will be held at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill.

The teams competing in the Central Regional will be vying for 10 spots in the NCAA Championships, which will be held from May 30 to June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. In addition to the 10 qualifying teams, two individuals not on advancing teams will compete in the NCAA Championships.

The regional bid marks the second consecutive year the Huskers have advanced to NCAA competition. Head Coach Bill Spangler also guided Nebraska to an NCAA bid last season when NU finished 22nd in the Central Regional.

The 2007 season marks Nebraska’s seventh overall regional appearance since the NCAA switched to the regional concept. In addition to last season, Nebraska also appeared in regional competition in 1994 and for four straight seasons from 1996 to 1999. The 1999 Huskers finished a school-best third at the NCAA Central Regional, before a Nebraska-best 13th-place showing at the NCAA Championships.

Nebraska is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships in Hutchinson, Kan., two weeks ago. The sixth-place showing marked Nebraska’s second consecutive upper-division finish at the Big 12 tournament, marking the first time in a decade Nebraska has posted back-to-back finishes in the upper half at the conference tournament. Nebraska is one of nine Big 12 teams who will compete in the Central Regional, led by second-seeded Oklahoma State, the 2007 conference team champion.

The Huskers are led by a quartet of senior golfers, headlined by Brady Schnell, who finished third at the Big 12 Championships. Last week, Schnell was also selected to the All-Big 12 team, Nebraska’s first such honoree since 1999. The Millard West graduate has also accepted a sponsor’s exemption to the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic from July 12 to 15 in the Quad Cities area.
