Szatmary Recognized by Big 12

After leading the Nebraska men’s tennis team through one of its greatest seasons since 1999, senior Adrian Szatmary earned All-Big 12 singles honors, the league office announced Monday.

Compiling an overall season record of 8-9 at the No. 1 spot for the Huskers, Szatmary also tallied a 2-4 mark against Big 12 opponents and was ranked as high as No. 76 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national polls.

Szatmary has faced a gauntlet of ranked opponents from the ITA national poll during the season.  Szatmary faced ranked foes in eight of his last nine matches and compiled an overall record of 4-6 against ranked opponents.

Szatmary stunned then-No. 73 Max Jones of New Mexico on Feb. 2, with a 6-3, 6-3 upset in the top spot of the lineup.  Competing against No. 60 Vaclav Kucera of Oklahoma twice during the season, Szatmary was victorious in both meetings as he posted two upset wins over the Sooner.  The first victory over Kucera also helped the Huskers knock off then-No. 23 Oklahoma for their first Big 12 Conference victory since 2003.

The Budapest, Hungary, native has led the team both on and off the court as a four-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earning first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2007.

The All-Big 12 honors are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
