Lincoln? The Nebraska soccer team will get in on a busy spring weekend for Husker athletics this Saturday, April 14 as it plays host to the Kansas Jayhawks at 3:30 p.m. at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The game will kick off right outside of Memorial Stadium following the Nebraska football Red-White Spring Game, which is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., and will be free to the public.
The Huskers are 2-0-1 this spring, earning wins over South DakotaState and Denver, while posting a tie with Minnesota. Last Friday, Nebraska came back from a 1-0 deficit early in the game against Denver and scored two unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the game to down the Pioneers, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
Thus far this spring, the Huskers have enjoyed well-rounded play, with impressive production from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The NU offense has been especially solid, scoring six goals in three games with five players contributing either a goal or an assist.
However, Nebraska faces a tough opponent in Kansas, which has also had a successful spring run in 2007. The Jayhawks, who scored an early goal to shut down the Huskers in their last meeting in October, have also gone 2-0-1 this season, including wins over Marquette and Washburn.
Also like Nebraska, which has faced the loss of three-time Big 12 Player-of-the-Year Brittany Timko to graduation, Kansas must replace 2006 Hermann Award Semifinalist Holly Gault, who led the Jayhawks to 11 wins last season.
NU’s contest against Kansas is one of two final spring games for the Huskers in 2007 and the last match held at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Huskers cap their spring schedule on Saturday, April 21, with a 6 p.m. kick off against Colorado in North Platte, Neb.
