Lincoln - More than 100 enthusiastic young women and men from 16 states tried out for the opportunity to represent University of Nebraska Athletics at the Cheer Squad tryouts on campus Friday, April 6.
Cheer Squad members will be asked to represent the athletic department at various varsity athletic sporting events, and to serve as ambassadors to the University at other select events.
Each applicant was judged on personal interview, academics, conditioning, fight song routines and cheer skills, and attitude and enthusiasm. Four former cheerleaders assisted with teaching the applicants the Husker routines and also assisted with judging. Two other judges with AACCA certifications and national coaching and judging skills joined with Nebraska officials in the selection process.
Results from Friday's tryouts will not be posted until background checks have been completed. Tryouts for the Scarlets Dance/Cheer Squad will be Friday and Saturday, April 20-21. Tryouts for the Mascot Squad will take place on April 12. Those who make the team and maintain a 2.5 GPA will be eligible for Nebraska’s Cheer Squad benefits package, which is among the best in the Big 12 and is competitive nationally.
The number of successful applicants will be based on talent, need and budget as determined by the athletic department sponsor and administration.
