Late Surge Lifts Nebraska Past Denver

Lincoln ? Two goals in the final five minutes of the game listed the Nebraska soccer team over Denver, 2-1, on Friday at the HawksChampionshipsCenter in Lincoln. The game, which was originally slated to be played outdoors on the Nebraska Soccer Field, was moved inside due to poor weather conditions.

The Huskers were offensively dominant in the win, outshooting the Pioneers 20-7. However, Nebraska didn’t start the game out quite as strong, notching just seven shots in the first half, compared to 13 in the second. And despite plenty of scoring opportunities throughout both periods, it wasn’t until the final five minutes that the Huskers got on the board.

Denver got in the door early, notching a goal just five minutes into the game at 9:39. Junior midfielder Taryn Hemmings beat the NU defense down the left side of the field and put a ball into the right corner of the net that Husker goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil was unable to knock away.

The goal would be one of the last offensive threats from the Pioneers, which added just six more shots in the next 80 minutes.

Nebraska’s game-tying score came from freshman Shay Powell on an outstanding pass from sophomore defender Lindsay Poehling. Poehling took a short pass from sophomore McKensie Kirchner before booting the ball 30 yards up field to hit Powell on a run toward the net. Powell controlled the ball in one touch and netted the ball to put the Huskers in a 1-1 tie at 84:55.

Less than three minutes later, Nebraska won a cornerkick on the right side of the field. Freshman Savannah Allen took the kick and bent the ball off the near post and straight into the goal for the game-winner at 87:31.

Powell’s goal was her second of the spring session, while Allen notched her first.

With the win, Nebraska remaines unbeaten on the season after posting a 2-2 tie with Colorado and a 2-0 win over South Dakota State on March 25.
