Huskers Advance to NCAA Championships

Lincoln ? The NCAA announced the field for the 2007 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships in State College, Pa., this week, which will include the Huskers for the fifth consecutive season.

Nebraska is 11th of 12 teams to qualify for the three-day event, which begins on Thursday, April 12 with Session I beginning at Noon and Session II at 6 p.m., CST. Nebraska will compete in the second session along with California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, PennState and Temple. The first rotation of the team qualifier features Army, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, OhioState and Stanford.

The top three programs from each session advance to the team finals at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13 and the meet wraps up with the individual event finals on Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

Nebraska dropped from 10th to 11th in the national ranks this week following a disappointing team score of 203.45 on March 31 at the MPSF Championships in Berkeley, Calif. However, several key individual performances kept the Huskers in the event standings, including two top-10 rankings.

Senior Jason Wassung held on to fourth in the all-around (51.63) for the fourth consecutive week, while also using a season-high 9.10 on the vault at the conference championships to move into 17th (8.78) on that event. It is the first time Wassung has been ranked on the vault since 2005.

Additionally, sophomore T.J. Schmidt remained at sixth on the pommel horse (8.89) and is also ranked 13th (9.12) on the parallel bars.

Ohio State enters the 2007 NCAA Championships ranked first in the nation, followed by two-time defending national champion Oklahoma and PennState in third.
