Coaches Update with Danna Durante

Hello Husker Fans!

What an exciting finish to our regular season: a season high, senior night...and an engagement!

First, we want to thank the incredible crowd at Friday night's meet; the energy in the DevaneyCenter was amazing. Secondly, we want to thank Doug Bush and the UNL Pep Band. We all enjoyed having them there and heard wonderful comments from the fans...Can you come to every meet? The atmosphere you provide is tremendous! Also, a huge thank you to the Nebraska men's gymnastics team for all their cheering...we LOVED the WOO train!

Now about the gymnastics – we had a full intrasquad on Thursday to prepare us for the postseason. Thursday went fairly well on vault and bars, but we struggled on beam and floor. The team knew it needed to refocus to have a good competition the next day.

Friday was incredible. We're not sure if it was the bleachers being down for the first time (which put fans much closer to the floor), the band, the “10.0” signs or having Herbie and Lil' Red in attendance, but the amount of energy and excitement was unbelievable!

The team took the challenge of having back-to-back meets and did very well. They started with some huge vaults, and landings are getting better every meet. Steph Carter went 9.90 again! Bars went well with a great combined effort on landings. Brittney Williams had a career high 9.90 – what an awesome routine! Beam was clean and consistent, and Emily Parsons was near perfect with a 9.975! Finally, floor was a blast! Way to go floor team! They have been working very hard on not only nailing their tumbling, but enjoying each routine. The difficulty we feature is awesome!

After the meet, we recognized our seniors:

Dani Millis

Dani spent three years on the team with us. This year, she moved on to diving and competed for our Nebraska diving team. Dani is a joy to be around – always smiling, always happy and a great team supporter! Dani came back this season and provided much needed support at our home meets and is always ready to help wherever she is needed. Thank you, Dani!

Stephanie Carter

Steph is an amazing story. She joined our team in 2004 as a walk-on with a shoulder injury. She had not competed gymnastics in a few years and wasn't sure if she would be able to get her skills back. She not only got all of her skills back, but earned a scholarship with her work ethic, attitude and effort after just one semester!  She went on to compete three events that year and has been competing three and four events throughout her career here at Nebraska! Steph is a tremendous worker, humble as they come and all about the team...all the time!

Michele Zabawa

Michele came to us just down the road from Omaha. We were so excited to have another Nebraska athlete on our team. Mich has always been passionate and outgoing. In her four years with us, she has grown and matured into an incredible young woman. She has great leadership skills, and she has used them to guide the team toward our common goals – realizing that sacrifice is part of being a team. It has truly been a pleasure watching her grow. And...on Friday at her final meet in the DevaneyCenter, Michele got engaged! It was such a sweet proposal and wonderful for her fiancée, Danen to share it with all of us. Congrats to Danen and Michele! Check out the pictures on our website www.huskers.com.

In closing, we want to thank everyone that helped make our 2007 home meets part of a season to remember! We truly appreciate the support and encouragement.

Now on to the Big 12 Championships this Saturday, March 31 at 7 pm in Columbia, Mo. Come on out, Husker fans, and cheer us on! Please wear your RED and bring your voices. We want to hear you!

GO BIG RED!
