Nebraska wrestlers Craig Brester and Robert Sanders were named first-team Academic All-Big 12 honorees, the conference announced Tuesday.
In order to be nominated to the first team, a student-athlete had to earn a 3.2 GPA and wrestle in 60 percent of the team’s competitions.
Brester, a redshirt freshman from Howells, Neb., majoring in mechanized systems management, is honored for the first time. Brester continues his strong performance in the classroom, as he has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring of 2006. He also has been strong on the mat, going 16-4 at 197 pounds for Nebraska.
Sanders, a sophomore nutrition, fitness & health promotion major from Blanding, Utah, earns his second academic All-Big 12 citation. A member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Sanders was a 2006 NWCA All-Academic Team Member. Sanders is 17-12 on the season, including a 5-5 record in duals.
Nebraska is next in action at the 2007 Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday, with first-round matches starting at 11 a.m.
