Seventeen Huskers Reach Friday Night Finals Events

College Station, Texas ? Lauren Bailey will have an opportunity to reclaim the 400 individual medley conference title Friday night after the senior turned in the second-fastest preliminary mark with a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:18.04 in Friday morning’s preliminaries at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas.

The time was the second fastest of Bailey’s career behind only the 4:17.57 she swam as a freshman to win the Big 12 title. The San Mateo, Calif. native had turned in the 11th fastest time coming into the Big 12 Championships, but she pulled away from Friday morning’s competition in the final stroke (freestyle) to win her heat and enter the finals second behind Texas A&M’s Melissa Hain (4:16.15).

Sophomore Courtney Jolly and senior Danielle Stansbury continued to have strong meets on the boards as both will compete in the finals of the one meter Friday night. Jolly placed sixth (246.10) and Stansbury was eighth (241.90). Neither competed in the one meter finals at last year’s conference meet, but Stansbury was fourth on the three meter Thursday night, while Jolly narrowly missed the finals with a ninth-place preliminary finish.

Joining Bailey in the finals events of the 400 individual medley will be senior Bailey Ingles, who qualified for the consolation finals with the 15th best preliminary time in a season-best 4:28.35. Senior Casey Schnack will swim in the bonus finals after finishing 22nd in a season-best 4:34.68.

Nebraska had six other consolation final qualfiers, including three in the 100 breaststroke after freshmen Hailey Dean (1:04.86) and Kaitlin Arntz, (1:05.32) and junior Adrienne Goodman (1:05.50) turned in the 12th,13th and 14th fastest times in season-best marks.

Senior Kate Wheeler qualified for her second consolation final in two days after she turned in a season-best time of 1:51.00 in the 200 freestyle, the 12th best time of the preliminaries. The sophomore combo of Jenny Toler and Jenna Stroud will swim in the bonus finals after finishing 19th and 21st. Stroud’s time was a season best.

The Huskers’ final consolation swimmers will be freshmen Kelsey Ida and Mariah Hutchinson, who found spots in the round of 16 in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Ida was 12th and Hutchinson was 13th. Sophomore Christina Yemm and freshman Sarah Broker tied for 23rd in the 100 butterfly in season bests of 58.43 and will swim in the bonus finals, as will senior Emilee Crawford in the 100 backstroke as she finished 21st in 58.42..

The finals will begin at 5 p.m. with the one-meter dive, followed by swimming at 6 p.m.
