Nebraska had 12 student-athletes named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Swimming & Diving teams, announced Tuesday by the Big 12 Conference.
The impressive number marks the third straight year that the Huskers have had at least 12 members on the team, as NU is averaging 14 selections per year since 2005. With 12 this season, 75 percent (12 of 16) of Nebraska's eligible student-athletes received either first team or second team recognition.
To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point-average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. They must also have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Seniors who have participated for at least two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Of Nebraska’s 12 members, eight were repeat selections from the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 squad, including seniors Emilee Crawford, Bailey Ingles and Casey Schnack, who were all named to the first team for the third straight year.
Seniors Lauren Bailey and Danielle Stansbury earned 2007 first-team accolades for the second straight year, while senior Katie Bowden was named to the team for the first time.
Another senior, Kate Wheeler, was awarded second-team recognition.
Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the Academic All-Big 12 team, but sophomores Jenny Toler and Christina Yemm made the cut in their first opportunity and were named to the first team. Sophomore Courtney Jolly, who redshirted in 2004-05, was a repeat first-team selection. Juniors Dani Millis and Kaci Ressler were also named to the first team.
Nebraska opens up the 2007 Big 12 Championships on Wednesday night at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
