Jay Moore: Senior Bowl Journal

Husker defensive end Jay Moore completed the final installment in his Senior Bowl Journal shortly after Saturday afternoon's game. Moore was one of the standouts in the North's 27-0 shutout victory. The Elkhorn High graduate posted three sacks for 21 yards and forced a pair of fumbles. Blackshirt teammate Stewart Bradley tied for the team lead in tackles with five stops, while Adam Carriker recovered a fumble and had a quarterback hurry as the North held the South to minus-35 yards rushing and less than 100 total yards. Moore, Bradley and Carriker will return to full-time training over the next few weeks before each of them put their skills to the test at the NFL Scouting Combine in late February.

Game-Day
Saturday, Jan. 27
Well the Senior Bowl is over and I can really say that I ended it the right way. I finished the game with three sacks and two forced fumbles.  I was really happy with the production I was able to produce for the defense.  The weather could have been better but I really did have a blast in the game.

I am really going to miss the rest of the guys on the defensive line.  We became really close during the week and I am going to try to keep in touch with all these guys as we go our separate ways.  I really enjoyed being around the Buccaneers staff for the week.  They did a really nice job of making it fun for us.

As for right now I am going to fly back to New Jersey and start my workouts back up again. I have another big week coming up soon, and that is the NFL combine.  So these next three weeks are going to be some of the most important weeks in my whole life.  The Combine will give me another opportunity to boost my draft position and a chance to full fill my goals.

I will fly back to Nebraska on the 15th of February to have some time off to recover before I go to Indianapolis for the Combine.  Also I will give so more updates every couple of days while I am up in New Jersey to tell you about how the preparation for the Combine is going.  Talk to you later and GO BIG RED.

Day Five
Thursday, Jan. 25
Today was the last real practice for the week. We were only in helmets this morning and honestly it was nice because we had been going hard for the last three days and it was refreshing knowing that our bodies could get a little break from the contact.

After practice we had the same schedule, except that we had to meet with some financial advisors.  Honestly I really did not want to meet with them at this time, but it was very interesting how they can manage you money and get you set for the future financially.

Tonight we have a team outing and we are going to Wintzell's Oyster Bay house for a seafood dinner.  I am looking forward to this just because it will be a change of scenery and a change in the type of food we have been eating for the past week.  Also after the dinner, as a team we will meet with the opposing coaching staff which the 49ers.  It should be fun and interesting to see what they have to say.

Tomorrow we only have a walk through as far as practice which will give our bodies even more time to recover from the beatings that we have taken this week.  I can't wait for Saturday. It's going to be a great time and a place to really showcase everything that we have been working on for not only this past week, but for our whole careers. Tomorrow I will have another update for you guys. Go Big Red.

Day Four
Wednesday, Jan. 24
Well the third day of practice is over and again I can say that I had a pretty good practice.  The highlight of my practice was getting a sack on a 3rd and one play during the team period.  This practice was the last hard one for the week and tomorrow we will begin scaling it down to get us freshened up for the game.

There are a lot of big name players here and it is fun to get a chance to hang out with all of them.  Lamar Woodley, the defensive end from Michigan, and I have hit it off really well.  Our rooms are right across from each other at the hotel and we are always talking and joking around with each other.  Unfortunately, Lamar pulled his hamstring and has not been practicing for the last two days.

Everyone is doing really well in practice.  I know that Stew and Adam are playing very well and improving their status.  Again we have meetings this afternoon and once those are over the interviews begin with other teams.  I do not have too many left for the rest of the week because most of the teams leave after Wednesday because most of the practicing is over.

As far as my status I feel like have I done a good job for myself in these last three practices and have improved my status as well.  Again I will have another update for you guys tomorrow. Go Big Red.

Day Three
Tuesday, Jan. 23
The second day of practice went pretty well again for me.  The day started early because we practiced at 9:30 this morning so we had to get up and eat breakfast and get taped before.  Like I said yesterday, I thought I had a good practice today.  There was maybe only one or two plays that I would of liked to do over but other than that I was really able to showcase by abilities to everybody in attendance.

After practice we came back to the hotel and ate lunch and had meetings with the coaching staff.  After the meetings I was able to get up to my room and catch a quick cat nap and get ready for the interviews with the other NFL teams that were there.  So far since I have been here I have interviewed with about 17 teams.  Tonight I interviewed with the Buccaneers, Seahawks, Rams, Texans, and Vikings.

Wednesday will be our last tough practice to get ready for the game and most of the scouts and other people involved with the NFL will leave because there isn't much left to see after Wednesday except for the game.  Again I hope I can have another positive report for you about my play in practice and I will have another update for you guys tomorrow.

Day Two
Monday, Jan. 22

Well Monday had a good start to it.  I got up and had a big breakfast with the rest of the guys and then went to the team meetings at 9 a.m. After the meetings we had to get ready for the National Scouting weigh in.  This weigh-in is like no other weigh-in. One by one you stand in front of 250 people in just shorts and nothing else while they read off you name, height, and weight.  It pretty much was one giant meat market.

After the weigh-in we were able to each lunch and get ready for practice. After lunch we had an hour walk-through with the team and then boarded the buses for practice.  The weather for practice was pretty good but it did rain on and off.  The practices are very similar to what we do at Nebraska since Coach Callahan and Coach Gruden worked with each other.  The practice was fun because you see all these players out there that you hear about, but now you are playing with them.  For myself I did pretty well for the first day.  There was a little rust at the beginning but it wore off as the practice went along.

As for tonight I have to meet with the Jets, Jaguars, and the Patriots.  I am looking forward to meeting all of them.  I hope everything is good in Huskerland and I will have another update for you tomorrow.

Day One
Sunday, Jan. 21
It has been an interesting and fun past few weeks.  I flew out of Omaha a day after the Cotton Bowl and headed for New Jersey to work out for the NFL combine and Senior Bowl.  I work out twice a day at Parisi Speed school in Fair Lawn, New Jersey where we work on everything to improve our draft status.  Our one day off is on Sunday but I have not had a day off yet because a defense line coach comes in on the weekends to help me improve my game for the Senior Bowl.

On Saturday, I left from New Jersey to come down to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl.  Today (Sunday) I got up and ate breakfast and immediately went to work.  When you walk around the hotel people and scouts are coming at you from everywhere.  Before I was able to talk to any of the NFL scouts I had to complete physicals and tests such as the Troutwine and the Wonderlic. After those were done I was free game for the scouts. I talked to about six different scouts today all wanting every piece of information about me that they may not of already had. I will talk to even more tomorrow and the next day.  This became somewhat tiring because you really never had a free time to sit down and eat lunch but it was still fun talking to all the scouts.

One of the fun parts about today was getting all the equipment and gear from Under Armour.  Since Under Armour is the main endorsement for the game they were giving us bags full of stuff and they even have a private room where you can go in and get more.  Overall today was fun and it was a good chance to meet all the other players as well.  Tonight we have our team meetings with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff and then I will go to bed to get ready for our first practice tomorrow (Monday), which I will to tell you all about.
