Holloway Named CVU National Freshman of the Year

Lincoln ? Nebraska setter Rachel Holloway was honored by College Volleyball Update in a pair of categories after leading the Huskers to a 33-1 record and a national title in 2006. Holloway was chosen as CVU’s National Freshman of the Year and was one of five finalists for the publication’s Setter-of-the-Year Award.

The redshirt freshman from Franklin, Tenn., guided a Husker attack that led the country in both assists (16.20/gm) and kills (17.40/gm) while ranking second in hitting percentage (.295). A third-team AVCA All-American, she finished 11th nationally in assists with 13.43 per game, including a career-high 65 assists in the regional title victory over Minnesota.

The second freshman setter to guide a team to an NCAA volleyball title, Holloway also averaged 2.49 digs, 1.11 kills per game and 0.56 blocks per game in 2006. She totaled 13 double-doubles on the season and had at least 50 assists in 11 matches, including each of the final three rounds of the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, she was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament team and was the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Year last season.

Washington’s Courtney Thompson was chosen as the organization’s setter of the year, leading the country with 14.50 assists per game.
