Lincoln -- With the first pitch of the 2007 season one month away, the Husker Home Run Club is sponsoring the Home Run Club preseason banquet. The fifth-annual preseason banquet will take place on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Grand Ballroom at the Embassy Suites Hotel (1040 P Street) in downtown Lincoln.
The event, which will raise money for the Husker Home Run Club, includes dinner and remarks from Husker Head Coach Mike Anderson and the NU coaching staff. The event begins with a social hour and silent action at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.
The evening’s featured speaker will be former Major League All-Star and baseball announcer Harold Reynolds. During his playing career with the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and California Angels, he made two All-Star appearances (1987-88) and won three consecutive Gold Gloves (1988-90). Reynolds was also the 1991 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.
Following his professional career, Reynolds spent 11 years at ESPN, serving as a studio analyst for the award-winning program, Baseball Tonight and providing analysis for the Little League Baseball World Series and College Baseball World Series for ESPN and ABC Sports. He won a Sports Emmy Award in 2003 for his work at ESPN.
The event will also feature an auction with numerous items, including a framed jersey signed by the 2007 Huskers, a Darin Erstad autographed bat, a tailgate party for 20 and other memorabilia and gift certificates.
The cost of the banquet is $50 per person or $450 for a table of 10 and all proceeds from the event will go to the Husker Home Run Club, and its support of the Nebraska Baseball program. Invitations were sent to Home Run Club members and season ticket holders earlier this month, and seats are still available for this annual event.
