Huskers Defeat Jackrabbits

Brookings, S.D. ? The Nebraska swimming and diving team earned its second straight road win and improved to 3-2 on the season with a 181-102 win over South Dakota State on Saturday.

 

Nebraska won 12 events, all of which were swimming, while the Jackrabbits earned points in both diving competitions as the NU divers competed at the Texas Invitational. In that meet, senior Danielle Stansbury led the Huskers for the second time in three meets with a 14th-place finish with a score of 187.25. Junior Kaci Ressler finished 18th (153.70).

 

Senior Kate Wheeler won three races for the Big Red against SDSU, beginning with the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:17.93) in the second event of the meet, and then sweeping the 100 (1:08.28) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.02) races for the first time in her career.

 

Behind Wheeler, two Huskers earned a pair of victories in senior Bailey Ingles and freshman Mariah Hutchinson. Ingles won the 100 backstroke (1:00.66) and 100 butterfly (1:00.15), while Hutchinson took the 200 freestyle (1:56.19) and 500 freestyle (5:11.92).

 

Other individual event wins came from Lauren Bailey (200 butterfly; 2:08.33), junior Lynn Siemert (50 freestyle; 25.16), sophomore Jenny Toler (100 freestyle; 53.82) and freshman Kelsey Ida (200 backstroke; 2:11.07).

 

Nebraska will now take its longest break of the year as it will not compete in another regular season meet until Jan. 13, when it opens Big 12 competition against Kansas at the Devaney Natatorium.
