Lincoln ? The Nebraska football team enjoyed a two-hour half-pad afternoon practice inside Memorial Stadium as the squad prepares for its sixth straight Big 12 matchup against Missouri on Saturday. The game marks just the second home contest in five games and the first time the Huskers have hosted the Tigers since the 2004 season.
Head Coach Bill Callahan gave the squad, now into their last quarter of the season, a break by ending practice about 20 minutes short for the third day in a row. The team earned the break with the attention to detail the team has displayed throughout the week.
“It was a good week of preparation,” Callahan said. “We’re excited about playing. I liked the focus, the concentration and the detail. That’s what any coach would look for, and that’s what was demonstrated this week.
“That’s what showed up on the practice field, and that’s what I’m excited about. We’re all excited about that aspect. When you’re focused as a team and come out and take the practice field with a purpose, and you see it pay off in practice, you see solid repetition, quality repetition, guys making plays, you get encouraged by that. I’m very encouraged by our preparation.”
Callahan additionally explained how the staff is continuing to monitor junior linebackers Corey McKeon and Steve Octavien to ensure they are operating at 100 percent by gametime.
“We’ll continue to look at that closely in the pregame as well as during the game itself. We’ll keep an eye on them,” Callahan said. “Mental reps in terms of your position means that when a guy is taking a rep, you can stand right behind the coach, and mirror everything that’s going on from a mental standpoint.”
The Huskers will hold a team walk-through in Memorial Stadium Friday afternoon before hosting Missouri in Memorial Stadium an ABC regional broadcast on Saturday at 11 a.m.
