Lincoln -- Three Nebraska women's gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches at the end of August, Head Coach Dan Kendig announced this week. Seniors Stephanie Carter and Michele Zabawa and former Husker Dani Millis were included on the annual team for achieving a 3.5 grade-point average or better during their junior years.
Carter, a native of Bryn Athyn, Pa., was honored for the second time in her career. A business administration major, she has been named a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection and a six-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll member while at Nebraska. Zabawa, an elementary education major who hails from Omaha, Neb., achieved Scholastic All-America status for the first time after also garnering first-team academic All-Big 12 honors as well. Millis, who majors in marketing, was honored for the first time on the NACGC list.
"We are proud when any of our athletes can excel not only in athletics, but also in academics," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "We try to recruit the total person -- someone with good academics, good athletic skills and someone who is an overall good kid. That is exactly what these three embody with their accomplishments."
Nebraska opens its season on Jan. 5, 2007 at the Super Six Challenge in Fayetteville, Ark. The six-team meet, which includes Arkansas, LSU, Florida, PennState and Denver and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
