On playing against Texas
“It’s just another game on the schedule. It’s a big game, like all the rest of the games. It’s Texas and they’re ranked fifth in the country, so to get a win over them, it would be really big to where we want to go.”
On the game plan against Texas
“We’re going to throw when we have to, but if gets to a point where we have the lead in the fourth quarter and we just want to run the clock out, we’re going to run. For the most part, we’re going to run the ball.”
On the importance of the Texas game
“It’s a great opportunity for the program, but with way we’ve been playing lately, we’re starting to establish ourselves again on top of college football right now.”
On the level of physical play of this game
“It’s going to be very physical. That’s kind of our team motto; we want to be physical every game. I guess you could say that we want to be kind of like the Pittsburgh Steelers and how they won the Super Bowl last year, just by being physical every single game. They came out and hit people with Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker, just pounding people every game. That’s what we want to do, be physical.”
On the level of physical play by Texas
“We expect that (physical play) out of every team we play, but especially this one. They’re big, they’re fast. We know that they’re going to be physical, but we have to match that.”
On his motivation playing against Texas
“It’s going to be a big game. I’m from Texas and everybody from my hometown is a Longhorn fan. I’m getting a lot of calls this week where they want Texas to win, but they want me to have a good game, like with 150 yards and two touchdowns. I tell them that I hope I get that (the rushing yards and touchdowns) too, but I want the win. If I get nothing but we win, I’m happy.”
On Nebraska’s emphasis on running the ball this season
“I’m not surprised, just because of the emphasis that we put on running the ball this spring. Then, in fall camp, we ran the ball and put in a bunch of running plays in. We kind of knew that it was going to be like that (running the ball a lot). I wouldn’t say we knew that we’d be running this much. We expected about 25, 30 carries a game, not 40 or 50.”
On the run defense of Texas
“They specialize in stopping the run, but we specialize in establishing the run. It’s going to be a great test. They have those big guys up front, those big defensive linemen, so that’s going to be a test for our offensive linemen. They (NU’s offensive line) has played well all year, but I don’t think they’ve seen a line as good as this defensive line, so that’s probably where they get a lot of ability to shut down the run.”
On the advantage of Nebraska’s depth at I-back
“That’s exactly where it works. You give Brandon (Jackson) or Marlon (Lucky) the ball, and they just start gashing and get them tired a bit. You put Kenny (Wilson) and me in there and we just pound on them, and they’re already tired. Once a team gets tired, they start missing tackles and not wanting to tackle big guys. That’s when you get big plays late in the game.”
On increased excitement in practice as Nebraska prepares for Texas
“I think it will be, especially with the way the Big 12 has been going, with us being on top of the Big 12 North. We want to stay up there, alone by ourselves, so this game is big just to stay on top of things and stay where we want to be.”
On staying under the national radar
“We really don’t worry about that a lot, just as long as we keep winning. The only team we lost to is USC, and they’re No. 2 or 3 in the country. We haven’t been getting a lot of attention, but we’re OK with that. The only time we worry about that is when bowl time comes around and we can get a BCS bowl bid.”
On the must-win status of this game
“I think this game is a must-win, especially considering where we want to go and how the season has been going, I see it as a must-win. Of course we want to be in Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium playing for the Big 12 Championship and this is a team that we’re probably going to see down there. If we can beat them this time, we know what we need to do to beat them and we can beat them again.”
On the performance of fullback Dane Todd
“He deserves all the credit. Without Dane, we wouldn’t have half the yards that we get. I wouldn’t want to have his job, just because he just goes in there and throws his head into people, just killing people and pancake-blocking people. He’s kind of like an undersized offensive lineman. He’s out there just opening up holes for us. He knows what he’s supposed to do, what we’re (the I-backs) supposed to do, what the offensive linemen are supposed to do, what the receivers are supposed to do. He probably knows as much as Zac (Taylor) does. He’s a big part of this team and he does a lot for us.”
On going against Texas’ linebackers
“We’re going to do what we plan on doing, just running the ball and our basic run plays. Their linebackers are big and fast, but you just have to keep hitting them in the mouth. That’s pretty much what we plan on doing all day long.”
