On Nebraska’s struggles against KansasState

“They’ve had some great teams in the past.  They have a great team this year.  They’re very tough and very physical.  You see that kind of statistic, that we haven’t won there in 10 years. It’s hard to believe, considering the teams that have come through here.  It’s in the back of our minds as we prepare this week, that we’re going into a road game against K-State and that we haven’t won there in 10 years.  We have a bit of a point to make.”

On the motivation gained from trying to break the streak

“It makes you work harder.  Someone tells you that it’s going to be 11 years, you think, ?I don’t think so’.  We’re going to go in there and break this streak right now.  That’s been set.”

On playing against freshman quarterback Josh Freeman

“It’s fun to see a young guy out there and see him mold into the game.  He’s going to be a spectacular player.  Watching him on film, he does some things wrong just because he’s a young player, but I’m sure he’s getting better and the coaches are really pushing him. It’ll be fun to watch.  Sam Keller, our scout-team extraordinaire, will give us a good look as Josh Freeman, so it will be fun.”

On looking to pressure a young quarterback

“It would be nice to blitz a young quarterback like that.  It would give our defensive backs a chance to make some big plays, get in his face, make him throw some bad passes.  I’m sure Cortney (Grixby) and (Andrew) Shanle would like to see that so they have a little field day back there.”

On pressuring KSU quarterback Josh Freeman

“We’re going to look at their offensive line, mainly.  They’re big and strong, but it’s their speed that brings them down a little bit.  If they play a good game and protect Freeman, he’ll complete more of his passes.  We’ll watch them on film and see how they do.”

On the focus of the Nebraska defense

“We’re very focused.  I think in the KU game, we realized that you have to put four quarters together, and I think we did that in the IowaState game, except for that last drive.  We played a very solid game and we’re carrying that over into this week in hopes that we can get our statistics back down to what they used to be.”

On the chance to win Nebraska’s 800th game in school history

“It would be an awesome feat for this university and the tradition.  I would be more than happy to be a part of that this season and this game - 800 wins is big time.  It’s up there with the Michigans and the USCs, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

On looking for his first quarterback sack

“I’m getting very antsy.  I’ve been this close on a lot of plays.  A lot of the packages didn’t call for blitzing.  Coach (Kevin) Cosgrove wanted to give the defensive line an opportunity to go to work.  We have a very good defensive line.  If I’m not blitzing as much, but I’m doing my part to help this defense, I’m fine.  I’m just going to do my job.”

On the unselfishness of the Nebraska defense

“It’s exactly the stuff that people don’t notice that makes a great team a great team.  Seeing what (Adam) Carriker and Ola Dagunduro does; their offensive line has to double-team both those guys every play, and that’s just to get two or three yards.  Ola and I joke that his job is to keep the center and guard off me and my job is to get over top fast enough so he can make a play.  He always says before the game, ?I’m going to get mine’, which means he’ll let his guy go, which would be very selfish, but he doesn’t do that.  I think that speaks volumes about our defense, that we’re willing to take ourselves out of plays to make sure another person makes the play.”

On KSU running back Leon Patton

“He’s very quick.  With big linemen, it’s going to be hard to see him.  They run a lot of power, a lot of zone out of the two-back sets, and they give him an opportunity to make plays, and he can make plays.  He’s very quick and very fast.  He’s able to break out of lines very quickly.  They’ll use him as a weapon.  They’ve used him thus far.  It’ll be interesting to see how he does against our front seven.”
