Tulsa, Okla. - At the conclusion of day two of the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Tennis Championships, senior captain James Clow is still competing after beginning his season with a 3-0 record. Clow advanced to qualifying play which consists of four rounds and is set to begin Monday, Oct. 2 and continue through Wednesday, Oct. 4.
Round three of prequalifying play proved to be a battle as Clow took the match to three sets against Tiago Espirito Santo of WichitaState. Clow got ahead early, winning the first set 6-3, but roles reversed as Santo won the second set 6-3. With the scene set for a tough third set, Clow prevailed when he fought his way to a 7-6(5) tiebreaker win.
“Our guys are really battling hard out there,” head coach Kerry McDermott said. “Even those that lost in the first and second rounds didn’t go down with a fight. Now that James is the only one left, we’re really focusing on getting him into the main draw.”
Qualifying play begins Monday morning as Clow faces David Galic of Baylor at 11:30 a.m. Galic is in his second season at Baylor and has a career singles record of 1-3 overall, including a 1-1 mark in duals. The winner of the Clow-Galic qualifying first-round match will advance to the second round and face either Benjamin Carlotti of North Carolina or No. 17-seedNic Edlefsen of Minnesota.
