Huskers Dominate on Day Two

Atlanta, Ga. - The Huskers' success continued into the second day of the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational, as the men's tennis team went 6-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles on Saturday.  Senior Adrian Szatmary and sophomore Hendrik Stahmer remain undefeated, advancing to the championship match in the Flight "A" and Flight "B" singles bracket, respectively.

After defeating the No. 1-seed in the second round of the Flight "A" singles, Szatmary then went on to face Marc Rocafort of Middle Tennessee State in the quarterfinals.  Szatmary defeated Rocafort in two close sets, 7-5, 7-6(4), advancing him to the semifinals where he faced the No. 3-seed Ricardo Gonzalez of Georgia.  After falling to Gonzalez in the first set, 4-6, Szatmary regained momentum and battled back to win in the the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-2. 

"We are so pleased with how hard our guys are battling to open up this season," head coach Kerry McDermott said.  "We have faced some strong competitors so far, but our guys are playing with the confindence they need to be able to battle and get wins.  Getting two guys into the main draw championship matches shows us what we're capable of and is just a great start to the year for this program."

In the championship match set for 11 a.m on Sunday, Szatmary will face the unseeded Ike Belk of Clemson.

Following a strong performance in day one, Stahmer was able to carry his success into day two as he defeated Auburn's Stephen Nash in the the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-3, and Furman's Andy Sobszyk, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals.  Stahmer now faces Ryan Farlow of Mississippi State in the championship match set for 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Senior James Clow contributed two wins on Saturday in the Flight "A" singles consolation bracket.  Clow has been unbeaten since losing in the first round of play to the No. 3-seed, Gonzalez.  Defeating Central Florida's Tarek Ben Saltane 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round, Clow advanced to the quarterfinals in the consolation bracket.  In the quarterfinals, Clow defeated Elad Gabay of Northern Florida, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, and in the semifinals Clow defeated Georgia's Josh Varella again in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.  Clow will face Pete Necajevs of Mississippi State on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the consolation championship match.

Day two of doubles brought the success that day one lacked as the Huskers went 2-0 in the Flight "A" doubles bracket.  The team of Clow and freshman Fracois Van Impe defeated the pair of Anic and Wessinghage from Southern Mississippi in the consolation quarterfinals, 8-6.  Also advancing to the consolation semifinals was the pair, junior Mark Tate and Szatmary, after they defeated the team of Poole and Frayincheaud from Southern Mississippi, 8-3.
