Gophers Post 3-1 Win over No. 25 Cal Poly

Lincoln - Minnesota's Kyla Roehrig posted a match-high  22 kills, leading the the Golden Gophers to a 21-30, 35-33, 30-17, 30-25 win over No. 25 Cal Poly in the first game of the Ameritas Players Challenge Friday.

Roehrig finished with 22 kills on .375 hitting and six blocks to lead the Gophers, who took the final three games after dropping the opener. Kelly Bowman and Jessy Jones had 11 kills apiece for the Gophers (2-2), which snapped a two-match losing streak. Minnesota out-blocked Cal Poly, 13.5-10.5 and held the Mustangs (5-2) under .150 ineach of the final two games.

Cal Poly and Minnesota traded points until the midway point in the first game, when an attack error gave Minnesota the first lead since the 1-0 mark, forcing the Mustangs to take a timeout with the score at 15-14. Cal Poly came back from the timeout firing as a kill from Ashleigh Bertoni sparked a 10-2 run that included two service aces from Kylie Atherstone. Cal Poly's Alicia Waller closed the match with four kills in eight points to put the Mustangs ahead after the first game.  Waller had six kills on 10 swings in game and finished with a match-high 20 kills.

Minnesota netted a gritty win in game two as the teams netted 20 ties before the Golden Gophers tied the match at  one  game apiece to head into the locker room.  The Gophers survived three game points, scoring the final two points of the game on Cal Poly hitting errors. Roehrig led Minnesota with nine kills on .500 hitting to lead the Gopher comeback.

The Golden Gophers came back from the locker rooms riding a wave of adreniline and pounded away a 30-17 win in the third game. Roehrig was the star for Minnesota, as she totaled nine kills on 11 swings for an .818 hitting percentage and added three blocks as the Gophers hit .600 and held the Mustangs to -.034 hiiting.

Behind Bowman  and Katie Vatterrodt, the Gophers closed the match with a 30-25 victory. UM took command with a 6-2 spurt, turning a 9-8 lead into a 15-10 advantage following a Jones kill. Cal Poly got to within 21-18, but kills by Roehrig and Jones, along with a Cal Poly error pushed the lead to 24-18 and the Gophers never let Cal Poly within three points the rest of the match.

Minnesota will face Louisville Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., while Cal Poly will go head-to-head with  No. 1 Nebraska Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
