Nebraska Head Coach Gary Pepin announced the Huskers' 2007 track and field schedule Thursday. Among NU's 27 featured competitions for the upcoming season are seven home meets, including the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Huskers' outdoor track and field schedule will feature three home meets at Ed Weir Stadium for the first time since the 2003 season, when NU hosted the first-ever NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The 2007 Big 12 Outdoor Championships will be hosted by NU for the first time in the 10-year history of the conference May 13-15. The meet follows two straight home competitions in the Nebraska Open (April 29) and Nebraska Invitational (May 5). The 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships will follow the Big 12 outdoor meet in Des Moines, Iowa, while the NCAA Outdoor Championships will once again be held in Sacramento, Calif.
"I am excited about our 2007 track and field schedule, but particularly about the outdoor season," Pepin said. "It should be a lot of fun to finally host the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. We feel that it is long overdue to be held at Nebraska."
Pepin also believes that the increase in number of home meets over recent seasons should be a great benefit for his men's and women's squads.
"It will be nice for our teams to not have to travel as much," Pepin said. "Our athletes will miss less school, and it will just be a great benefit to be able to stick close to our home base."
The indoor portion of the 2007 schedule is highlighted by four meets in four straight weeks to open the year. Annually scheduled competitions, such as the Holiday Inn Invitational, adidas Classic and Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, each will be held again, while one new meet named the Conference Challege will pit Big 12 programs Kansas State, Missouri and NU against Mountain West schools Air Force and Colorado State. The Conference Challenge will be a scored meet similar to last year's Nebraska Triangular, which matched the Huskers against Colorado State and Kent State.
NU will take to the road for the final five weeks of the indoor season, including the championship stretch of the schedule. The 2007 Big 12 Indoor Championships will be contested away from the Bob Devaney Sports Center for the first time in six years when Iowa State plays host at the Lied Recreation Center Feb. 23 through 24. The NCAA Indoor Championships return to Fayetteville, Ark., for the seventh straight season March 9th though 10th.
