Huskers Hold Mock Game Scrimmage

Lincoln ? The fourth week of preseason drills concluded Saturday morning, as the Nebraska football team held a two-hour mock game scrimmage in full game attire inside Memorial Stadium.

Head Coach Bill Callahan said the mock game provided the Huskers with the opportunity to go over anything from normal game scenarios to pregame, halftime and locker room procedures.

“With the new facility being in place, we’re coming out of a new end (of the stadium) and the logistics are a little bit different,” Callahan said. “I wanted to make sure everyone knew where we are going and what’s going on, especially when you have newcomers on your football team. I think it’s good to orientate those players to what you normally do in a gameday situation.”

Callahan also addressed the progress of junior cornerback Andre Jones, who returned to practice earlier this week after missing a few days of fall camp with a leg injury. Jones appears in line to play an important role this season for an NU secondary that will play without senior starter Zak Bowman in 2006.

“(Andre) has been practicing hard,” Callahan said. “I know he’s been taking getting a lot of reps. He’s been taking all of the full-time reps. We haven’t backed him down or limited him in any sense.

“He’s a competitor,” Callahan said. “He wants to play. He’s a fine athlete and an excellent football player. He understands the urgency of his role and what he has to do to get better. He’s looking pretty good since he came off that injury.”

Following an off day on Sunday, the Huskers settle into their game-week schedule on Monday.
