Huskers Welcome NU Students to Practice

Lincoln ? Approximately 4,200 Nebraska students crowded into the Memorial Stadium stands Sunday afternoon, as the Husker football team welcomed the University of Nebraska student body to fall camp for the second straight year in what has turned into an annual event on the NU campus.

The Huskers worked out for nearly two hours in half pads inside the stadium while the Nebraska pep band and cheer squads provided additional entertainment for the NU students. The workout began with the team exhibiting its one-on-one drill featuring battles between select players, and ended with each of the student fans receiving the opportunity to experience the famed Tunnel Walk by running onto the field to cheers and high-fives from the Husker players.

Head Coach Bill Callahan and recently named team captains Adam Carriker, Brandon Rigoni and Zac Taylor also addressed the crowd following practice before the team joined the band and crowd in singing “There is No Place Like Nebraska.”

Callahan attributed the high energy level displayed by his squad to the excitement created by the student crowd.

“Our fans created a spectacular environment this afternoon for out players to practice in,” Callahan said. “(The fans) bring so much emotion and energy, and our players feed off of it. It’s a lot easier to go through practice when guys are excited and trying their best for the student body. All-in-all, it was a great practice this afternoon. It was quick, it was brisk and it was everything we wanted.”

Sunday’s practice marked the final workout before the start of fall classes. While the NU players will take Monday off from practice, the Husker coaching staff will utilize the day to examine game film and gauge where the squad sits as it enters its in-season schedule.

“We have a pretty good handle in terms of where the players are at,” Callahan said. “We are still competing hard and fighting for spots. Last week was huge for us. We got in a lot of scrimmages. Now we’ll have some time as a staff to really get through a lot of footage of (practice film) and see exactly where we are at.”

Nebraska returns to the practice field Tuesday afternoon.
