Huskers Wrap Up Two-a-Days

Lincoln ? Week three of Nebraska’s fall training camp came to a conclusion Friday, as the Husker football team split its final two-a-day practice session between the HawksChampionshipCenter in the morning and Memorial Stadium in the afternoon. The second workout was cut short by approximately 15 minutes after a brief thunderstorm moved through the Lincoln area.

Head Coach Bill Callahan said he was pleased following the day’s first practice in half pads regarding his squad’s progress through two and one-half weeks of fall camp.

“We’re really upbeat,” Callahan said. “We feel good about where our team is at and the progress we’ve made. It’s just a matter of time now. We’re just refining things, cleaning the small things up and trying to eliminate the errors in our game.

“I’m really pleased with where our team is at from an assignment standpoint. You don’t see many (busted plays). Guys get it, they know what they’re doing and when you have that type of mindset, it really allows for a great practice. It allows you to function much smoother through the course of a practice. All-in-all, it has been a heck of a camp.”

While the Husker offense and defense each have shined at times during fall camp’s first weeks, neither unit appears to be ahead of the other.

“When one area improves, the other area improves, as well,” Callahan said. “The pendulum swings a little back and forth as to who has the upper hand, but the competition is tight. What you don’t see is anyone dominating either side of the ball. There’s really good competition and good balance across the board.”

In other news, junior cornerback Andre Jones sat out practice Friday with an injury. While Callahan said he expects Jones only to miss the next week of practice because of the setback, he went on to praise senior Isaiah Fluellen and junior Tyrell Spain for their progress at cornerback after only recently moving to the defensive side of the ball.

“The two moves we made from the offensive side of the ball to the defensive side have really helped us maximize our depth,” Callahan said. “When we get Andre back, that will be a real plus for us, but (Fluellen and Spain) have really stepped up. It is a credit to their character and their will to want to get out there and play for our football team.”

Nebraska will spend a day away from the practice field Saturday, as the team instead greets Husker fans at Memorial Stadium for Fan Day beginning at 10 a.m. Coach Callahan’s annual 5K Fun Run/Walk for Resources will be earlier Saturday at 8 a.m. The Huskers return to the practice field on Sunday at 4 p.m. with the University’s student body encouraged to attend.
