Three Huskers Earn ABCA Regional Honors

Lincoln ? Three University of Nebraska baseball players were honored Tuesday, as the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released its All-Midwest Region Team. Outfielder Luke Gorsett garnered first-team accolades, while shortstop Ryan Wehrle and closer Brett Jensen garnered second-team honors in voting by head coaches in the region.

Gorsett, who was named an All-American by the NCBWA last week, finished the 2006 season with a .348 average to go with 15 homers and 48 RBIs. A seventh-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2006 MLB Draft, Gorsett ranked among the Big 12 leaders in homers (second), slugging percentage (second), total bases (133, eighth) and batting average (15th). Gorsett was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and the Brooks Wallace Award.

Wehrle earned the ABCA honor for the first time as he hit .367 with eight homers and 48 RBIs, leading the Huskers in batting average, hits (83), runs (50), doubles (22) and on-base percentage (.447). A first-team All-Big 12 pick, Wehrle ranked among the Big 12 leaders in doubles (second), batting average (sixth), on-base percentage (seventh), hits (eighth), total bases (10th, 131) and slugging percentage (10th, .580). A third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Werhle was drafted in the 18th round by the Cincinnati Reds.

Jensen wrapped up a distinguished career with his first ABCA selection this spring. A first-team All-Big 12 selection, Jensen went 5-0 with 13 saves and a 2.56 ERA in a team-high 27 appearances this season. He was second in the Big 12 in saves and ranked among the national leaders in that category. Jensen finished his career with a school-record 31 saves and finished second all-time at Nebraska with 80 appearances. Jensen was selected in the 14th round by the Detroit Tigers in this month’s draft.
