Lincoln -- The Nebraska men's basketball team had five players from the 2005-06 squad earn academic accolades as they were named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, the Nebraska Athletic Department announced Thursday. A total of 249 Husker student-athletes were named to the honor roll after posting grade-point averages of 3.0 or better during the 2006 spring semester, including 38 NU student-athletes who produced perfect 4.0 GPA semesters.
Leading the way Thursday was a trio of seniors who received their degrees in May. The three native Nebraskans -- Jason Dourisseau, Bronsen Schliep and Tony Wilbrand -- combined for 28 honor roll certificates during their careers, while redshirt freshman Paul Velander added his third straight honor in 2006. Freshman Marcus Walker was named to the squad for the first time.
Schliep continued his stellar academic career as he posted his 10th consecutive semester with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. The honor roll selection was the 10th straight for Schliep and Wilbrand, while Dourisseau was named to the squad for the eighth straight semester. Dourisseau and Schliep were each nominated for Academic All-America honors this season after earning first-team academic all-district honors.
Wilbrand also earned praise for academic excellence as he earned his third consecutive first-team academic all-conference honor in 2006. He was a second-team selection as a redshirt freshman, making him one of only a handful of players in Big 12 history to earn an academic all-conference honor four straight years.
