Thompson Qualifies for Worlds

Former NU national champion wrestler Tolly Thompson recently earned a trip to the 2006 World Championships by winning two matches against Steve Mocco in the U.S. World Team Trials on Sunday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Thompson will wrestle at 120 kg in the freestyle division after sweeping Mocco in the best-of-three championship series.  Thompson earned a takedown in the first match to win, 1-0.  In the second match, Thompson took Mocco down and earned the pin in under two minutes.

Thompson, who earned a bronze medal in last year’s World Championships, will wrestle for the U.S. National Team at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, which start October 2.

At Nebraska, Thompson set the school record for wins in a career with 157 victories from 1993-97.  Thompson also holds the school record with 72 falls, including 53 pins, in his career.  A three-time conference champion and All-American, Thompson won the national championship at heavyweight in 1995, becoming Nebraska’s sixth national champion in program history.
