The Huskers were one of just 29 Division I-A schools nationally to be honored for graduating 70 percent or more of its football student-athletes. Just six schools of the 29 schools that were honored achieved a rate of 90 percent or better.  <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska has been honored by the AFCA for its 70 percent or better graduation rate for six consecutive years and 10 times since 1994.

Southern Methodist led the nation with 100 percent graduation rates for their freshman classes of 1999-2000, while Boston College, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Southern Miss all managed graduation rates of 90 percent or better.

Along with Nebraska, Big 12 Conference schools Baylor, Iowa State and Texas Tech were honored for having graduation rates of 70 percent or higher. The other schools nationally included Auburn, California, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado State, Florida State, Iowa, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), North Carolina, Penn State, Rice, Rutgers, Syracuse, Troy, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

Of the record number of 104 schools that responded to the AFCA’s graduation rate survey, the median graduation rate for the 2001-2001 freshman class was 57 percent, the same number as a year ago.
