Huskers Host Shockers Tuesday at Hawks Field
Fresh off a series win over No. 5 Texas, the Nebraska baseball team returns to Hawks Field to begin a four-game homestand. The week begins on Tuesday, April 25, as Wichita State visit Hawks Field. General Admission tickets are available for Tuesday’s contest for as little as $5 and can be purchased by calling the NU Ticket Office at (800) 8-BIGRED or at the Hawks Field Ticket Office beginning at 5 p.m.
First pitch between the Huskers and Shockers is set for 6:36 p.m. and the game will be shown in Nebraska on Cox Cable in Omaha (Ch. 3), Time Warner Cable in Lincoln (Ch. 77) and Charter Media (check local listings). The contest will also be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including KFAB 1110 AM in Omaha, 1400 AM in Lincoln and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington, along with an Internet broadcast at Huskers.com.
The Huskers, who are 7-2 against ranked teams this season, have won 14 of their last 15 games and return home with a 32-6 mark, the best Division I record in the country. Nebraska won 2-of-3 against fifth-ranked Texas, overcoming a four-run deficit on Saturday before Johnny Dorn, Erik Bird and Zach Herr combined on a five-hit shutout on Sunday, the first time Texas had been shutout at home since the 2004 campaign. The Huskers’ 32-6 mark is the program’s best 38-game start since 1983, and a game ahead of last year’s school-record 57 win pace.
The series win moved NU into first place in the Big 12, percentage points ahead of the Longhorns and a game ahead of Oklahoma, which comes to Lincoln during the final weekend of the regular season. NU has now won 11 straight Big 12 series dating back to last season, including a school-record seven in a row on the road.
NU stayed fourth in both the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls released Monday afternoon. They are joined in the top 10 by both Texas and Oklahoma, giving the Big 12 three teams in the top 10. The only other conference that can boast that in the Baseball America poll is the ACC trio of North Carolina, Clemson and Georgia Tech.
The Huskers run into another team hitting its stride, as Wichita State comes to Lincoln with a 31-14 record and has won seven of its last eight games. The Shockers, who had lost 2-of-3 in each of their first three MVC series, have now swept Missouri State and Bradley to move into a tie for first place in the MVC. Left-hander Kris Johnson will take the hill for the Shockers on Tuesday. He is 4-0 with a 3.65 ERA in eight starts. NU has not announced its starter for Tuesday evening.
