Lincoln, Neb. - Oklahoma State fired a 291 to increase its lead to three strokes after two rounds at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championships at the Country Club of Lincoln on Tuesday.
The Cowgirls finished the first 36 holes at 592, after opening the tournament with a 301 on Monday. OSU, which entered the day with a one-stroke lead over second-place Texas A&M, increased its lead to three strokes after the Aggies shot a 293 on Tuesday. Texas A&M is still well within striking distance of the top spot, entering Wednesday's final round at 595 after shooting an opening-round 302 on Monday.
"I think we had a really good day," Oklahoma State Coach Laura Matthews said. "We did better earlier in the day, and we didn't play as well later on. Overall, I thought we really played great. I'm proud of them and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
A&M's Ashley Knoll continued to lead the tournament after producing a one-under par 71 on Tuesday. Knoll's solid second round followed an opening-round 69 on Monday to put her at four-under par with a 140.
Knoll owns a five-strike lead over Iowa State's Jessica Shin and Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg, who produced Tuesday's top round with a three-under par 69. Shin added a two-under par 70 to tie Lindberg in second at 145.
"I thought I played good. I was consistent, and I wasn't as good yesterday. Usually the first round has been the strength this semester, but I really came back today," Lindberg said. "I struggled on the greens, but had good birdie opportunities. The difference between yesterday and today was that I kept myself on the fairways. Yesterday that cost me some shots."
Missouri's Stephanie Wavro added a 70 of her own to climb into fourth place at 146. Wavro led a strong charge by the Tigers, who posted the top team score of the day with a 287 to climb from eighth to third place in the team standings. MU sits eight strokes back of the Cowgirls and just five strokes behind the Aggies at 600 through two rounds.
The hosts from Nebraska, which entered the second round in a tie with Baylor for third, also stayed in the title hunt by noching a 297 on Tuesday to stay within 12 strokes of OSU.
Kansas State (609) and Iowa State (610) round out the top six teams in the 12-team field, while Colorado leads the second tier of teams at 611 in seventh place. Baylor (616), Oklahoma (618), Texas (618), Texas Tech (628) and Kansas (634) round out the tournament field.
