Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 59 Nebraska men's tennis team was defeated by No. 3 Texas, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
The Huskers (10-9, 0-4 Big 12), who have faced their fourth ranked opponent in five matches, snagged a win at the top doubles spot, with senior Jerry Posch and sophomore Mark Tate defeating Callum Beale and Travis Helgeson, 9-8 (7-5).
In singles action, junior James Clow forced No. 36 Roger Gubser into three sets at the No. 2 spot, falling 5-7, 6-1, 10-7. Freshman Hendrik Stahmer also pushed Michael Venus into three sets at the No. 6 slot, but was defeated 0-6, 6-2, 6-7. Senior Jerry Posch faced his seventh ranked opponent of the year, falling to No. 20 Travis Helgeson, 6-1, 6-3, in the top singles spot. Junior Adrian Szatmary also fell to No. 30 Callum Beale at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-1.
"Texas played really well and that's why they are third in the nation," Coach Kerry McDermott said. "They just kept pounding away, but we fought really hard because that is the character of our team. Hendrik (Stahmer) fought very hard at the end and almost got a singles point for us, so I'm really proud of the way he played today."
The Huskers return to action on Sunday when they play No. 19 Texas A&M at noon in the Nebraska Tennis Center.
