University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Athletic Director Steve Pederson have announced that the University’s Athletic Department is currently in the process of re-certification by the NCAA.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
More than a decade ago, the NCAA began a program to certify intercollegiate athletic departments. To receive certification, athletic departments must meet rigorous standards in three major areas--academic integrity, governance and rules compliance, and student welfare and diversity. The Nebraska Athletic Department was certified for the first time in 1998 and is now in the process of undergoing another review.
The certification and accreditation process began with a self study. Chancellor Perlman appointed a steering committee chaired by Steve Wilborn, Dean of the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>College of Law, to conduct the self study. Additionally, the chancellor appointed three subcommittees to focus on each of the three major areas. Those subcommittees recently completed a first draft of their respective reports.
Each of the three drafts is currently available for review on the UNL web site at the link above. The website provides a convenient form for submitting comments and information about the self-study process. Any input on the self-study should be received by April 21.
After receiving and considering any comments, the steering committee will then prepare the final version of the self study and forward it to the NCAA. That version of the self study will also be available for review on the UNL website (www.unl.edu).
The self study will then be submitted to the NCAA, followed by a visit by the organization’s site visit team. The group, which will be chaired by Dr. Robert W. Lawless, President Emeritus of the University of Tulsa, will be on campus from Oct. 2-4. The team will then submit its findings and the NCAA will determine whether the Nebraska Athletic Department will be recertified.
