After a two-week break, the Husker bowling team is back in action at the Alabama A&M Holiday Classic in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center.
Sixteen teams are set to compete in the tournament, including second-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson and third-ranked Central Missouri State.
"Thirteen of the top fifteen ranked teams will be in Birmingham. We look forward to trying to succeed against the best competition in the country," Coach Bill Straub said.
Last year, Nebraska defeated four other teams to place first at the Holiday Classic. The Husker bowlers are hoping to defend their title while capturing their sixth consecutive tournament win of the 2005-06 season.
"We have had success in Birmingham the last couple years," Straub said. "Hopefully this trip will also be as rewarding."
Baker Claims Third Career Tournament Title
Sophomore Lindsay Baker led the Huskers to their fifth consecutive title at the Morgan State Invitational on Feb. 18-19. Baker topped the all-tournament team with a 218 average and a total pinfall of 1,094. This title marked Baker’s third career tournament title.
Senior Karla Engh also made the all-tournament team, claiming a season-high finish of fifth. Engh held a 196 average over five games.
The Huskers finished first with a combined total pinfall of 7,883. Fairleigh Dickinson followed close behind with a 7,867 pinfall.
